The Mindful Farmers Daily Diary 317

Good morning everyone and welcome once more to Ballinwillin House Farm, gardens and RetrEat centre on day 27 of our latest lock down. This morning the neighbourhood is cold with the winter freeze but soon we will experience the death of winter and the birth of spring, but also this morning in Ballinwillin we mourn the death and passing of Joe Mulcahy our neighbour, a legend in the music business and a founding member of the famous Maurice Mulcahy Band. A band that gave huge enjoyment to thousands of people worldwide. This morning our prayers are with his family, friends and neighbours. Now destiny calls Joe to a place of music where his trumpet will sound again for all our spiritual enjoyment, where his heart will always remain generous, all heavenly doors will open to his musical light as you now quietly befriend your death and you have no need to fear. You are among your own orchestra in the big band with your pure white suit you are now equal to your destiny and nearer to Earths heart. Rest in peace Joe. Continue to pray, bless and power healing to all who need it and wear your smile.

The Mindful Farmers Daily Diary Day 298

Well, all during yesterday I got a tremendous response to Nollaig na mBan or Womens Christmas. It is great to see that the tradition is alive and well in some parts of the country anyway. I believe it helps us all in our sense or struggle to belong. It is always nice to remember us belonging and I believe it creates harmony between soul and life and that in itself creates a sanctuary for us to visit especially on special day during the year.

We know that our hearts have an eternal longing and it is beautiful to look back and celebrate occasions with warmth and kindness when we gaze within. It also allows light enter our belonging into the future where we may always be blessed with a wild beauty to create an invisible circle of protection around us and all who we love. So today, let us embrace our traditions and propel them forward with the respect that our ancestors bequeathed them to us. Continue to pray, bless and power healing to all who need it and wear your smile.

January 6th was always a special day in the old days back in West Limerick. It was and is Little Christmas or Womens Christmas and I don't mean that in a sexist manner. The women of the house and especially my Mum weren't allowed to lift a finger or do any work on the farm or in the kitchen, just rest and be pampered. Dad would be setting the scene since Christmas and reminding us to lend our support and to honour the women in the house.

Dad would be setting the scene since Christmas and reminding us to lend our support and to honour the women in the house. He would always cook a beautiful goose for mains, smoked ham for starters and plum pudding and fresh cream for dessert. It was always a wonderful occasion for the women in the house but the person of high honour was my Mum. How about all you men out there honour the women in your life, give them a day off and pamper them. It worked well in the old days and I'm sure it will again. Where can we go everyone is asking but we all know we are locked down and in our homes, farms and our immediate environments. So what do we do when we meet ourselves in this way? Do we meet a stranger or are we at peace in our company? Here we have a beautiful opportunity and its opportunity is presented in the stillness of silence. Wisdom guides us to embrace those trails that were previously unknown to us or more poignantly able to face. Meeting oneself in this way can be disturbing but once we accept and embrace ourselves it brings us a peace and a calm we didn't know before.

Wouldn't it be lovely and healing for us all to regard this lock down as a new beginning that has been quietly forming and waiting until we were all ready to emerge and very soon we will all be home in a new rhythm of life. This morning as I walked on the crusted, frosty grass the cold seemed unrelenting and then when I think of the Covid numbers almost at 5000, I am worried. I am worried for my family, my co workers, my friends and this beautiful country. The path that we have so painfully taken seems to have been washed away behind us and in front of us and the way forward is very concealed from us by a low fog.

Good morning everyone and welcome once more to Ballinwillin House Farm, gardens and RetrEat centre on day 5 of our latest lock down. Many of our beautiful traditions have been lost in the past 12 months and it seems that our new life is too young to be born and birth has been delayed. We cannot lay claim to anything now so this cold and foggy morning reminds me that our eyes are blurred and we seem to be losing sight of our hearts and souls. Where do we put our trust now that we all have to make our own way in a very responsible way? The old and faithful ways will prevail. Our hearts will become more refined and true and then we welcome the arrival of a new virus free dawn. Continue to pray, bless and power healing to all who need it and follow the restrictions with honour and wear your smile.

It is another Sunday and another day of partial rest for The Mindful Farmer but when our bodies slow down and rest for a while our minds can go on and on chattering whether we are listening or not but it is important to take note of the minds chatter because by noticing it we begin to gain control over it and eventually quieten it. The noise will always be there but by noticing it and by massaging it the noise will lessen its destructive effect.

But isn't it funny, millions of people long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon. This new year is going to be testing but great and the kind messages and phone calls from all of you out there have been very encouraging. They are like a glowing sky sunset with blessings that never end and it only takes a tiny spark to warm every heart. At this time of year as it is beginning, The Mindful Farmer likes to ease into it in solitude, silence and with nature. I always regard it as a mystical time of year when we are surrounded by the wonders of the world. Nature is one of the great wonders of the world and it is greatly at rest now. The leaves have left the trees bare. Sometimes when I think about the bare trees and leaves I think the leaves measure our years. They are gone as the days are gone and the bare branches silently speak of a new year slowly advancing its foliage, its buds and its fruit. Our lives, like the trees, have their seasons.

It is a very historic day and entering into a new year with many uncertainties I always try and bring all my thoughts and reasoning back to the earth here at Ballinwillin House and gardens and I try and work out what it all means to me. I always like to begin the new year in solitude where I learn to explore my thoughts and feelings and then in the stillness I come to see that it is time for new beginnings and new ideas. It is Thursday the 31st December and the last day of a very tough and trying year for the people of Ireland and all over the world. There is much in the future and in the present we cannot see or understand but that doesn’t matter much to us if we have purpose in our lives. If we are happy and content this state will lead to balance in our human life and not allow us drift through life. It will lead us through a path to peace and happiness and as this year draws to an end we give thanks for the gifts it has brought and how they become part of us where neither time nor tide can touch them.

The surprises that 2020 brought us we never could have expected as if they were hidden in the forgotten corners of our fields for decades and now they pierce our every sore with salt. From these darkened corners, secret sorrows poured like the river behind our house. My hope and prayers now is for the secret, streaming sorrows of 2020 be buried and loosened in the stream never to return. And now on this eve of something great and new, we bless this year for all it has taught us. Also for all we have loved and lost and here’s praying it will bring us all together nearer to our invisible dream. Happy New Year from an optimistic and prayerful Mindful Farmer.

For The Mindful Farmer this is a beautiful time of year. Business is quiet and maybe even quieter, the family is all around, phones not ringing and on the farm we do the minimum just feeding all the animals, bedding them and checking they are having a nice and restful time as we are. It is a time of year where most farmers and most people rest and let their minds and bodies heal. It is a time when I listen for my longing to be free and where my belonging is generous enough to let me dream.

We know how to treat the garden but do we know how to look after ourselves. Yesterday I was out in the fields with my son John and grandson JJ and it was wonderful to have the 3 generations out in the fields and then to meet Biffo our magnificent and huge wild boar and to see JJ and 1 and a half years old sitting on his back was a beautiful sight, experience and photo. Isn’t it extraordinary to think that we cannot imagine life ending or imagine it is not ending. The circle of life goes on. It was here before us, it is here now and it will be here after we are gone.

All we have in this life is the now, a very brief now and in this now we are alone and yet we are not alone because we are accompanied in this circle, in this journey through life by all life and this all life is very evident in the fields and gardens at Ballinwillin House and can be felt at all times just life in the fields yesterday. It is a magic way to live. This has all been unfolding since my birth and dreamed of before I was born. It is as if to see my face in the mirror of my mind. Have a lovely day and continue to pray. It is another beautiful and restful Sunday. My parents would often say how we spend our days is how we spend our lives. We always seem to think that if we just get through today, tomorrow will be better. This doesn’t always follow and it is no way to live our lives. We should not fit too much into any one day and even though I meditate on average 1.5 hours each day I find it is not enough to do what I need to do.

When I meditate I need to add more with prayers and healing to all who need it. My plan for 2021 if I am still breathing is to spend more time alone and in prayer. In the early Christian times important changes and decisions were referred to the Holy Spirit for his sensitive promptings, for his advice and support so things will go well for me, my family and my friends. Wouldn’t it be nice for us all to do the same from now on? Have a lovely day and continue to pray. Bless and power healing to all who need it and wear your Sunday best smile.

It is where we are helped to establish our identity and it is where we learned to love and be loved. It is where our needs of the mind, body and spirit are first recognised and met and it is where we learn to become whole, stable and yet always open to change and surprise. In the Celtic culture the occasion means a social event and we tend to break time up into divisions we look forward to and manage. To live like this is to experience time as a constant invitation to growth, to become more than you have been and to allow false to fall away. There is no place for false in our lives and as we live the life we are meant to live be lived and as our blessings wait to usher us towards the grace and beauty we need now that we have the extra light to infuse us.

When you look at 500 years ago archaeologists have identified this Neolithic monument as one of the worlds most important prehistoric landscapes. There are many mysteries surrounding the constructive genius of this monument for instance, many of the 5 ton stones strategically positioned. How were they transported and positioned? We could talk about this mystery forever but what is important for me is that it reminds me to shine its light through my heart on this day and make me feel so special, so Celtic and so Irish. So lets all feel special today and to mark this day every year I always plant a new tree or shrub and this Monday I am planting a beautiful shrub called Winter Sweet. It is another lovely Sunday and a special day here at Ballinwillin House as we welcome home our baby daughter from Abu Dhabi. There will be great happiness due to her return. It is always sad having a child working in exile either by choice or non choice. The family is always important but never more so than at Christmas. I believe this is so because we harbour all our best childhood memories from Christmas and in my case anyway it is my yardstick to measure happiness but also think of the loved ones that have passed to their spiritual homes where they guard over us. But at this time when you dream it is always about home and you are always among your own. It is a time where the rhythm of our voices rise like birdsong. When you are not at home the country of exile is always cold to your heart and voice. It can be a place without echoes where nothing of yours has happened here but when you come home your friends and family will open all doors to a new beginning and all our hearts will brighten with overflowing happiness. So The Mindful Farmer would like to share his happiness with all you out there. Continue to pray, bless and power healing to all who need it and wear your smile.

Many will rightly say health is wealth and this is very true and our health will always improve if we surrender to the earth and its soil. For our work to be fruitful we must do it with trust, abandonment, vision and commitment. It is important to move slowly through time by living in the now.

Continue to pray, bless and power healing to all who need it and wear your beautiful smile.
